How to evaluate secured cards for building credit

A secured credit card usually requires a deposit. Check whether the issuer reports to major credit bureaus, whether the deposit may be refunded, and whether the account may graduate to an unsecured product.

An advertised credit profile is not an approval guarantee. Building a positive payment history and keeping balances manageable generally matters more than the reward rate.

Does a secured card automatically improve my score?

No. Reporting policies and how you manage the account matter. Late payments and high balances can work against your goal.
