A CREDIT AND HABIT GUIDE

What to check before applying for a credit card

A practical credit card application checklist covering APR, fees, welcome offers, eligibility, and issuer terms.

Read the cost disclosures

Check the annual fee, purchase APR, any introductory APR end date, balance-transfer fees, cash-advance fees, and foreign transaction fees. A promotional rate is temporary; know which rate follows it and what actions can end the offer.

Check the offer conditions

A welcome offer may require qualifying purchases by a deadline. Confirm eligible purchases, exclusions, spending requirements, and restrictions for previous cardholders. Spend only what you can afford; an offer is not a reason to create extra debt.

Understand the application

Prequalification and preapproval do not guarantee final approval. A full application may involve a credit inquiry. The issuer determines your eligibility, credit limit, and final terms based on its review.

Keep a copy of the terms

Compare the offer shown on the issuer's application with any summary you read elsewhere. Save the applicable disclosures and pay attention to payment due dates after opening an account.
