Start with the redemption you will actually use
Cash back generally offers a straightforward cash or statement-credit redemption. Points and miles are program currencies whose value depends on how they are redeemed. A large points balance does not necessarily buy more than a smaller cash reward.
Compare earning and redemption together
Look at your regular spending categories, any spending caps, and excluded merchants. Then read the issuer's redemption rules: minimum redemptions, transfer partners, transfer ratios, and availability can change the practical value. Avoid assigning every point the same dollar value.
Subtract the costs
Compare an annual fee with the benefits you expect to use, not the advertised maximum value of every credit. If you carry a balance, interest can outweigh rewards. Review the current APR and fees before focusing on points.
Build a short list
Use our cash back, points, and miles categories to find candidates, then compare the current issuer disclosures. The directory summarizes products; it does not guarantee a particular redemption value or an approval.
