A credit card should reward your life, not change how you live
For most households, rent or a mortgage is one of the biggest expenses each month. Bilt is unusual because its cards can reward eligible housing payments without the ordinary credit-card transaction fee. But a Bilt Card is not automatically the best choice for everyone, and its rewards are more complicated than a plain cash-back card.
Bilt offers Blue ($0 annual fee), Obsidian ($95), and Palladium ($495). Each member can have only one Bilt Card at a time. Which one makes sense depends on your housing cost, everyday spending, point redemptions, and whether you will really use Bilt's special credits.
Reviewed October 28, 2026. Bilt announced significant changes on October 27. This guide distinguishes today's options from the updated benefits beginning in 2027. The official program overview and card terms govern.
Meet the three Bilt Cards
Blue ($0/year) earns 1X Bilt Points on ordinary eligible purchases, 2X on flights booked through Bilt Travel, and 3X on hotels booked through Bilt Travel. It offers a simple entry into housing rewards without an annual fee.
Obsidian ($95/year) earns 3X on your chosen dining or grocery category; the other category earns 1X. If you choose groceries, the 3X applies to the first $25,000 in qualifying grocery spending per calendar year; the remainder earns 1X. Other eligible travel earns 2X, flights through Bilt Travel 3X, hotels through Bilt Travel 4X, and most other purchases 1X. In the original benefit structure, it also offers a restricted $100 annual Bilt Travel hotel credit.
Palladium ($495/year) earns 2X on ordinary eligible purchases and eligible other travel, 3X on Bilt Travel flights, and 4X on Bilt Travel hotels. It includes Priority Pass lounge benefits, subject to the membership terms. In the original structure, there are $400 in qualifying annual Bilt Travel hotel credits plus $200 in annual Bilt Cash. Extra points may justify the price for a high spender, but not every household will use $495 worth of incremental benefits.
Eligible Lyft rides can earn 3X on Blue, 3X on Obsidian, or 4X on Palladium when you link the accounts and set Bilt as your active loyalty partner. Participating Bilt dining partners can add bonus points on top of the card's ordinary earnings, depending on the restaurant. Check Bilt's current card comparison, Lyft requirements, and neighborhood dining details.
How rent and mortgage points really work
On the Housing-only option, the number of points you earn on an eligible housing payment depends on your eligible non-housing Bilt Card purchases in the same billing cycle:
- Less than 25% of housing paid in ordinary card purchases: a minimum 250 housing points.
- At least 25% of housing paid in ordinary card purchases: 0.5X housing points.
- At least 50%: 0.75X housing points.
- At least 75%: 1X housing points.
- At least 100%: 1.25X housing points.
Say your housing payment is $2,000 and you normally spend $1,000 each month on eligible card purchases. That reaches the 50% tier: 1,500 housing points, not 2,000. If you normally put $2,000 on the card, you reach 2,500 housing points. The housing charge itself does not help you qualify for the tiers.
The old Wells Fargo-era five-transactions-per-month rule does not apply to the new Bilt Card 2.0 lineup. More importantly, buying unnecessary things to hit a tier defeats the purpose of rewards. Even moving necessary spending from another card has an opportunity cost: that other card might pay better rewards. See Bilt's explanation of both housing options.
The alternative available in 2026: 4% Bilt Cash
Today, cardholders may choose Flexible Bilt Cash instead of the Housing-only tiers. Eligible everyday purchases earn 4% in Bilt Cash, in addition to their ordinary Bilt Points. That sounds like a flat 4% cash-back card, but it is not. Bilt Cash can be spent only on qualifying benefits and redemptions inside the Bilt ecosystem.
One option is to convert Bilt Cash to rent or mortgage points: $30 Bilt Cash unlocks 1,000 Bilt Points. The maximum is 1X of eligible housing payments. A $2,000 housing payment needs $60 Bilt Cash to unlock 2,000 points. You would earn $60 Bilt Cash from $1,500 of qualifying everyday card spending at the advertised 4% rate.
This is not a free exchange. At an estimated 1.5 cents per Bilt Point, 2,000 points are worth $30, but they cost $60 Bilt Cash. If you could have used the Bilt Cash at its face value for eligible purchases, converting it into points destroys value. If you have no other real redemption for it, converting can be a practical way to avoid wasting the balance.
Our calculator below does not count the same Bilt Cash twice. It estimates useful merchant redemptions, then converts remaining qualifying Bilt Cash into housing points where available, and treats any remainder that cannot be used as having no realized value.
An important October 27 announcement: the 2027 rules
Already effective: Each Bilt Cash award now expires at the end of the month 12 months after it was earned. Bilt removed the old December 31 expiry and $100 year-end rollover cap, including for Bilt Cash already earned.
Starting January 1, 2027: Newly opened Bilt Card accounts will not get the 4% Flexible Bilt Cash earning option. Instead, housing points follow the Housing-only tiers, up to 1.25X. Regular everyday point multipliers remain unchanged.
If you already have a Bilt Card opened before January 1, 2027: Your original rewards setting generally continues until your first card account anniversary in 2027. You may opt out in the Bilt app before that anniversary to keep the legacy 4% Flexible Bilt Cash option and the corresponding existing credits. Otherwise you move to the refreshed benefits. Once on the refreshed benefits, moving back to the old 4% option is not available. Changing to another Bilt Card tier also moves you to the refreshed structure. Check your exact anniversary date.
With refreshed benefits, Obsidian receives $100 annual Bilt Cash instead of its original $100 hotel credit. Palladium receives $600 annual Bilt Cash instead of its original $400 hotel credits plus $200 Bilt Cash. A Bilt Cash credit is not money deposited in your bank, and the new hotel redemptions are limited to two eligible bookings per year with status-based caps.
Bilt also announced Daily Rewards beginning January 15, 2027, but uncertain drawings and promotional rewards are not assigned a value in this article. See the official October 27 announcement.
Compare the cards with your own spending
Use JavaScript to calculate live card estimates. All guide text is available without JavaScript.
You can only hold one Bilt Card, so the right question is which card delivers the most realistic value based on your own spending? Our interactive calculator shows all three cards side by side, with 2026 and 2027 scenarios, your valuation of points, annual fees, how much Bilt Cash you truly redeem, and what your restricted hotel credits are worth.
How to redeem Bilt Points for the best value
Transfer to airline and hotel partners. Bilt has a broad travel transfer network, frequently at 1:1; individual partners such as Accor may use a different rate. Transfer only after confirming a useful award, its cash price, availability, taxes, conditions, and whether the hotel or flight is something you would have purchased. A headline points valuation does not guarantee you will achieve it.
Use the Bilt Travel Portal. You can redeem points on eligible flights and hotels, sometimes combining cash and points. Compare the underlying cash price with direct bookings and check the cents per point before buying.
Use Bilt Points for a statement credit. Cardholders can redeem points, rather than Bilt Cash, toward their Bilt Card balance. Review the actual conversion amount at checkout; Bilt does not guarantee every point is worth 1 cent in this redemption. A statement credit does not replace your required minimum payment.
Consider the home down-payment option. Bilt currently advertises 1.5 cents per point toward an eligible U.S. property down payment, subject to paperwork and a real property purchase. We offer 1.5 cents as an illustrative starting value in the calculator, not as a general cash-out rate.
Rent credits, partner shopping and experiences are additional options, usually with different and changing conversion rates. Check Bilt's complete redemption guide, statement-credit instructions, and down-payment rules.
Can you cash out Bilt Cash?
No. Despite its name, Bilt Cash is a promotional credit. Under Bilt's legal terms, you cannot withdraw it through ACH, check, wire or ATM, and cannot use it as an ordinary Bilt Card statement credit. You can use it for eligible partner offers—potentially certain Lyft, Grubhub, Bilt restaurants, fitness and hotel bookings—and other Bilt-specific benefits. Many are capped per month, per booking or per year.
A useful redemption strategy is to first identify things you would have bought anyway, and count only those as savings. Then, if your card still has Flexible Bilt Cash housing unlocking, compare using remaining cash for housing points against letting it expire. Make a calendar reminder for each credit's expiry. Review the current Bilt Cash redemption guide and legal terms.
Obsidian and Palladium can also use a Point Accelerator: redeem $200 Bilt Cash to earn +1X on up to the next $5,000 in eligible purchases. At 1.5 cents per point, the maximum extra 5,000 points are estimated at only $75. This is hard to justify if you could otherwise use the full $200 Bilt Cash for purchases you wanted, though the conclusion changes if that cash was unlikely to be used. Our calculator leaves out this optional accelerator to avoid optimistic stacking.
Paying rent or a mortgage: the actual setup
In Bilt, open My Home, choose your housing payment type, and connect an eligible bank account. Bilt supports certain mortgage-servicer connections, online payment portals, eligible checks, and other BillPay methods. Eligible housing payments can avoid the usual card transaction fee; the funding amount is generally debited from your linked bank account in approximately 24 hours, not added to a revolving balance you can finance for months.
Always have the full housing payment available. Check your mortgage servicer's or landlord's receipt. Bilt recommends allowing around three business days for certain mortgage payments to arrive. Only eligible residential housing transactions through Bilt qualify; don't assume unrelated third-party payment processors have the same treatment. Refer to Bilt BillPay instructions.
Welcome offers: compare the first year separately
As advertised on October 28, 2026, the welcome lineup includes $100 Bilt Cash (Blue), $200 Bilt Cash (Obsidian), and $300 Bilt Cash plus 50,000 Bilt Points and Gold Status (Palladium). The additional Palladium points and status require $4,000 in eligible non-housing spending in the first 90 days. Actual eligibility, restrictions and offers are controlled by Bilt's terms.
A large first-year bonus should not be treated as an ongoing annual benefit. The calculator optionally models a first-year estimate, including the separate Palladium spending requirement, so you can still see how much the card may cost in subsequent years.
More fine print that can change your real return
Rent Day: Bilt currently promotes double points on eligible everyday card purchases made on the first day of the month, capped at 1,000 additional points per month. Housing payments do not earn that double-points bonus, and Rent Day bonuses do not stack with the Point Accelerator. Treat Rent Day as a small optional extra, not the foundation of a card comparison. See Bilt's Rent Day FAQ.
Elite-status Bilt Cash milestones: Bilt members, including cardholders, may earn $50 Bilt Cash for every 25,000 qualifying points toward elite status. The calculator excludes this nonlinear bonus because not every redeemed or promotional point necessarily qualifies and threshold timing matters. Members should check progress and qualification directly in the Wallet.
Authorized users: Bilt allows up to five authorized users, with reported annual fees of $0 per additional Blue user, $50 per Obsidian user, and $95 per Palladium user. You remain responsible for their purchases; their eligible spending can count toward a shared Housing-only spend threshold. The calculator assumes no paid authorized users and does not add their separate fees. If you plan to add one, subtract the appropriate cost from the estimated annual value. Additional cardholders are not separate Bilt primary cards.
Choosing Obsidian's category: The default is dining. New cardholders generally have a 30-day choice window; after that, Bilt says they may change the selection annually in January. A calculator can show which category is mathematically stronger, but that does not mean you can switch every month. Groceries bought at stores coded outside the supermarket category may not qualify.
Annual travel credits: Under the original benefits, the Obsidian and Palladium hotel credits are split into semiannual allotments and require a qualifying stay of at least two nights through Bilt Travel. This is why the calculator asks how much those credits are really worth to you instead of crediting the entire advertised amount automatically.
APR, fees, and credit limits: The three cards are issued by Column N.A. and serviced by Cardless. Review the individual cardholder agreement for the current purchase APR, cash-advance APR, penalties, and other fees. All three advertise no foreign transaction fees. Housing rewards do not turn a card into free borrowing. Bilt says rent payment funds are pulled from your linked bank account; missing those funds can create problems independent of your ordinary card bill.
Changing card tiers: Eligible members can upgrade or downgrade while keeping their existing account history, but doing so may affect welcome offers, annual fees, hotel credits and any preserved legacy Flexible Bilt Cash election. Do not change products solely for a welcome offer without first reviewing whether it is available and whether credits or points may be reversed.
Downsides and customer feedback worth considering
Bilt's rules have changed repeatedly. Independent travel and credit-card writers have praised the longer Bilt Cash expiry but questioned the 2027 retirement of 4% Bilt Cash and new hotel limitations. The different account transition dates make the fine print especially important.
The ecosystem can make credits less useful than advertised. If you rarely use participating partners or qualifying hotels, a $100 or $600 Bilt Cash credit may be worth substantially less to you. Our calculator lets you discount it.
You could do better with a different card on everyday purchases. Bilt may be attractive for housing yet less rewarding for dining, groceries or other categories than a separate card. Don't move spend without calculating the rewards you forgo elsewhere.
Some cardholders have reported payment, account or promotion issues around the 2026 transition. Those are individual reports, not established failure rates, but housing payments are too important to assume everything worked: verify every payment. You can read recent community discussion.
Annual fees, bonus caps and merchant coding matter. The Obsidian grocery bonus stops at $25,000 per calendar year. Travel credits usually have eligible booking requirements. The card-network merchant category code, not the label on your receipt, often determines the point rate.
Interest and debt can wipe out the rewards. Pay your full statement balance by the due date, budget your housing payment separately, and do not manufacture spending to meet a tier. For card-interest and statement rules see the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Which Bilt Card would we choose?
Blue is a strong default for someone who wants no annual fee and a low-maintenance way to earn eligible housing points. Obsidian is worth calculating for a household with significant qualifying dining or grocery spending. Palladium deserves consideration when high everyday spending genuinely earns enough incremental points and real premium benefits to overcome $495 every year.
For an existing cardholder, preserving legacy Flexible Bilt Cash may be a more consequential choice than the card tier. Compare the value of cash you can actually redeem, your housing tier, and the option to switch in the future. If uncertain, check the settings and deadlines with Bilt directly.
